On Dec. 4, Mosaic in Northern Indiana hosted the annual Christmas party at St. Hedwig in South Bend.

As a special treat this year, the South Bend Police Department came to assist unloading vehicles and stayed to eat and dance with individuals in service.

This partnership came as a result of the ongoing community outreach between Mosaic and first responders.

It has been one year since the Mosaic Self Advocates Group formed, and the group is gaining momentum. Starting with just five members, the group has grown to 20 people attending meetings on a regular basis.

Most recently, members have been selling Martin’s Supermarkets coupon books as a fundraiser to pay for the two conferences they will attend. So far the group has sold almost $500 dollars’ worth of books. This also helps people selling build critical social skills.

If you live in the Elkhart area, you may already be familiar with the downtown Art Walk. Art Walk is a collection of artists who, sponsored by local businesses, come together for an evening to showcase and sell their works.

There are four evenings a year when Art Walk is held. It is usually the second Wednesday of May, July, September and November.

Members of our Community Advisory Committee mentioned the Art Walk could be a good place to get out in the community and introduce ourselves to a population who may not have heard of us before.

“Embracing God’s call to serve in the world, Mosaic advocates for people with intellectual disabilities and provides opportunities for them to enjoy a full life.”

This is Mosaic’s Mission Statement. As a part of our ongoing goal to advocate for the individuals we serve, we participate in outreach projects and events.

Despite the fact that there is an overabundance of available jobs in our community, it is still difficult to find employers who are willing to hire people with intellectual disabilities at a fair wage.

Advocating for the individuals who would like to work is extremely important to our agency, as it is across all of Mosaic.

When we have a success story, we are not only proud of the individual who has pursued a meaningful goal but also of our community for taking a step toward inclusion of all community members.

We were blessed as an agency this year to have a sucessful Partners in Possibilities Fundraiser. This would not have been possible without the support of our community!

For nine months, five Mosaic agencies; Terre Haute, Northern Indiana, Pontiac, Rockford and Macomb from Indiana and Illinois came together for a leadership training series called Mission into Action led by Geery Howe.

The training was divided into four sessions. The Terre Haute and Northern Indiana agencies hosted two sessions each.

Over the course of the program, 10 books and multiple readings were assigned and early morning discussions were based on these readings. Nightly, homework was assigned which was usually two or three articles on management skills.

On Saturday July 16, Mosaic in Northern Indiana held the annual picnic at Hannah and Friends. As usual, everyone who attended enjoyed good food, fellowship and dancing. After the picnic, some of the guys from the Cherry Tree home still had enough energy to rock the night away at the World Pulse Festival on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.
