Duane Ploof has been employed at Mosaic for 17 years. You might not think that it's unusual to work somewhere for 17 years, but Duane is 80 years old.

He was born Jan. 6, 1936, and raised on a farm near Onawa, Iowa. He started driving a truck right out of high school and worked in packing houses for 20 years.

He had a friend who worked in Winfield who invited Duane to join him here. Duane and his wife Imajean moved here where he worked for the Winfield State Hospital & Training Center for eight years. He retired when the WSH&TC closed.

On Friday, October 16, 2015, several of us had the pleasure of accompanying Tori Virden to the InterHab Annual Conference in Wichita, KS. She received the award for Achievement in the Workplace. We couldn't be more proud of Tori and how her job has helped her become more independent, self-confident and friendly. Tori says, "Thank you Mosaic for giving me employment. I want to help take the "dis" out of the word disability and I want people to focus on the "ability" of the person."

InterHab held their annual conference last week in Wichita, KS. On Friday, October 16th, they held their awards luncheon. InterHab uses artwork created by individuals with intellectual disabilities as the awards given to the nine award winners.

This year Mosaic in Winfield submitted 13 entries to be added to over 100 more art entries from all over Kansas. Abbey Stanley's sunflower painting was selected as the award for the Outstanding Volunteer Award this year.

Between her two jobs, Tori Virden gets to participate in grinding, preparing and serving coffee, things she learned through Mosaic. As the winner of InterHab’s Achievement in the Workplace Award, Tori said she would like to help people focus on ability and take the “dis” out of disability.

When Tori came to Mosaic in Winfield, she struggled with anxiety and other challenges that made life difficult for her. Getting the help she needed to learn to make her own choices, Tori was able to turn her life around.

Twenty four individuals from Mosaic in Winfield traveled yesterday to the Pawnee Bill Museum in Pawnee, Oklahoma. Pawnee Bill had a big wild west traveling show with people like Annie Oakley and Wild Bill Hickok. They sat up big tents and preformed gun fights, trick shooting and riding.

On Thursday, April 23, Mosaic in Winfield held their 2nd Annual Spring Fling Prom Dance. It was a very special evening thanks to our partnership with the Southwestern College men's and women's golf teams. Many of the ladies were dressed up in beautiful dresses and the gentlemen looked dapper as well.

"The Mosaic dance is always the highlight of our year," said Brad Sexson, Southwestern College golf coach. "It gives our student-athletes a chance to not only serve others by helping with the event set-up but to also interact with Mosaic individuals during the dance itself."

On Wednesday, April 22, about 20 individuals from Mosaic in Winfield and their staff traveled to see Big Brutus located in Southeast Kansas. They enjoyed their time touring and climbing on the machine, picnicing and learning about strip mining. Thank you to the dedicated Mosaic staff who help create a meaningful day for the Mosaic people we serve.
